South Broad Concourse Activation
Project Type: Placemaking

Role
Lead Strategist, Design Manager
Description
SEPTA engaged Gensler in a study of the Broad Street Concourse to understand potential uses to activate and better utilize the existing space, in support of longer term improvement and investment strategies.
Outcome
By identifying short and long term interventions, I created a framework for consistent activation of the concourse, aimed at building public trust and excitement around the future of the South Broad Concourse. These activations reflected a post-pandemic reality, where reduced ridership and reduced indoor gathering capacity were expected constraints.
PHASE 1: DISCOVER
PHASE 2: DEFINE
PHASE 3: DELIVER
PHASE 1: DISCOVER
This study explores the untapped potential of the concrete desert that is the south concourse under Broad, a vastness most easily accessed at the Walnut-Locust subway stop. During the discovery phase, I coordinated and facilitated intercept interviews and user surveys, performed demographic/market analysis, and identified locations around the city to tour for inspiration and connections.
PHASE 2: DEFINE
By identifying short and long term interventions, I created a framework for consistent activation of the concourse, aimed at building public trust and excitement around the future of the South Broad Concourse. These activations reflected a post-pandemic reality, where reduced ridership and reduced indoor gathering capacity were expected constraints.
PHASE 3:DELIVER
The type and level of activation varied throughout the Concourse in response to the changing conditions and size of the site.
Together, with the design team, we tested and developed visualizations to tell the story of the future of the space.
